My "potions" have been up and running- made an oatmeal-almond-orange face scrub that was delish and perfect for my sensitive skin!
We made focacia bread with kalamata olives to go with a fish dish last week that was super scrumptuous. Im definitely into making bread now!
After a week of all Haiti all the time (as it should be these days, of course), I was inspired by spending some time with my slovak Grandmother to attempt a meal of my people- PIEROGIES! there are 100 ways to spell and pronounce this word, but Im choosing this one. Reg and I made the dough and the filling and it was perfectly bland and buttery- just as it should be! I had to supervise Reggie so he wouldn't attempt to add anything resembling spice or flavor!
See below- yum!
Having mastered my grandmom's recipe (no quantities or measurements, just vague directions like- "add water so its not too dry or too wet") we decided we would combine our heritages and make Haitian pierogies! We froze the rest of the dough and filling and will brainstorm on this next project.
Since I'm almost finished (2 months after starting) reading the Omnivore's Dilemma, I finally did some research on the dairies that sell milk in our local Whole Foods.
Here's what I found, in case you're in the Pittsburgh area and are interested:
natural by nature: http://www.natural-by-nature.com/ourstory.htm , Lancaster, PA (4 hrs from pgh)
snowville creamery: http://www.snowvillecreamery.com/home.html , Pomeroy, OH (4 hrs from pgh)
turner: http://www.turnerdairy.net/index.htm - the definition of local (right outside city limits, with milk shipped from farms within a few hours away)- this is a cooperative for sure. hormone free, and the pictures give a connotation of grass-fed, im not so sure as it isnt stated anywhere.
whole foods 365 brand: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products/faq/milk-eggs-faq.php - the 365 brand.
All the dairies use high-temp, short-time pasteurization, and are organic (except 365, which actually isn't organic- but still rBGH free). From a grass-fed, free-to-roam picture, the first 2 dairies seem to stack up best. And they are local. Price-wise, I think they are within $.25 of each other, but would have to check. Reggie prefers the taste of the Nature brand.
Ive been informed that to really process the Vit A & D, I should be drinking something with a bit of fat in it, as those are fat soluble nutrients. But I love my watery, "blue" milk (as my German friend called it when she first encountered skim). I don't drink much as it is, so I may try 1%- Reggie will be happier at least. And I know, I need to drink more, Im chastised for this daily. Just not a big dairy person, but the 1/2c I put in AM cereal probably isn't enough. I can hear my bones breaking now.
