Last Saturday we had our first, and last, party of 2009. The Housewarming!
We decided, post-hoc, that we made new friends by inviting them to our house!
There was the expanded usual cast of characters- The other DC implants, the work friends, the grad school friends, the phd friends, the young(er) neighbors. Didn't invite the people we bought the house from, even though they invited us to their housewarming, I just didn't want them poking through their/our house. too weird. Anyway, the cast- Reg picked up a "stray" on the bus (or the stray picked him up), and he came with his wife (lovely!). A few friends of friends, a few significant others, a 5 week old infant, and voila! our front porch, back porch, back yard, and entire downstairs were PACKED with people. I mean PACKED! I couldn't believe it! We ran out of food within a few hours, and some people (myself included) ended up with only wine for dinner (not bad at the time, definitely bad the next day. ugh.)
People showed up ON TIME. Like, 7pm, 3 people were at the door! I was barely dressed and no food was out. Who shows up on time for a housewarming? I certainly don't (unless Im helping you set up, in which case, Im there all day- but ON TIME???) So we put the early-comers to work lighting candles, filling chip baskets, etc.
I, of course, made a 5.5 hour mix, which, as planned, started a move-the-furniture-out-of-the-dining-room dance party around midnight. It was the MJ. Or maybe the JJ. either way- shoes came off, hats went on, and we shook it til 2am, at least- the end time is a bit fuzzy (see above comment about my sauvignon blanc dinner feast).
Thanks to everyone who helped warm our house and overlooked the missing light-switch plates, the hole in the dining room wall, the dead black-eyed susans (damn japanese beetles), the broken front AND back screen doors, and the insufficient grub. Thanks for reminding me its more important to have your friends than to have a "perfect" home (not an easy lesson for me). Thanks to those who travelled farther than 2 miles away (deanery rocks our world yet again- what a treasure!) It was fabulous seeing you all, dancing with you, and having such a beautiful time! What a perfect way to really close the summer and open another school year.
:-)
love,
the gillefonds
