bedroom

It's been awhile since we finished the bedroom- painted it before we even really moved in, and of course there was the great double closet disaster of summer 09. But it wasn't truly complete until we finally had one of our favorite wedding photos framed and up on the wall. We had a Georgia O'Keefe place-holder for awhile, but knew that was a#1) too obvious (i mean, O'Keefe flower painting in the bedroom? that's second only to in the gynecologist's office...sometimes the metaphor can be taken too far); and b#2) not really representative of US.
It surprises me how happy this photo of us makes me. It's our first kiss, the "you may now kiss the bride" kiss. In the background my best friend Lauren is smiling, the minister is smiling, I think Reg's brother Jean-Yves is clapping. To me, that moment was what made it all official. Like when we were handed the keys to the house. One minute you are you, single, renting. The next moment you are us, married, mortgaged.
Now everytime I walk in or out of the bedroom, I have a little inside smile looking at that photo.

here is the photograph in color, courtesy of our wonderful photographer, Melody Farrin:

I love the hotel-feel of the bedroom. Its teeny tiny, even the guest room is bigger. It is at the back of the house, quiet, the windows look over the backyard, and to the one tall apt building in our neighborhood. I wish and hope that someday when the windows are open I will be able to hear the zoo animals just down the road. Just one lion roar, or sea lion call. I thought I heard something once, but have now chalked that up to too many margaritas post an Amanda-Reggie Mexican cooking adventure night. But anyway, I love a small bedroom. I would sleep in a little cave if I could (and we practically do). I never understand people who have sitting rooms in their bedroom. I dont want to hang out in there, I don't need an arm-chair, or reading nook. Who really reads in a nook? In our last apt the bedroom was massive- 14x16' or something ridiculous like that. I felt swamped. This one could be a BIT bigger (the closet takes up 1/3 of the square footage) but I think it turned out quite well.
a few others photos of the room, complete with Oscar getting his fur all over the duvet, naturally. :-)
