Urbandictionary.com defines poser as: 1.one who pretends to be someone whose not. 2. who tries to fit in but with exaggeration.
That is how I felt at the start of last week. My boss invited me to speak at a conference in Santa Monica, California. This would be my first "real" professional speaking event. Ie- not one taking place at my institution where I would serve as an easy add-on, or one where I had submitted research and been selected to present. But a real conference, with paying guests, where I get paid and my expenses were covered by the hosting organization. You're thinking exactly what I was thinking- why me? The other 3 presenters were all Big and Important, while I am basically Lame and Unknown. Poser. However, I have to admit, once I got to the conference, I was made to feel right at home in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. The entire thing was a success and gave me a renewed sense of professional confidence in myself. Today I turned that confidence into writing a revision of a manuscript I submitted over the summer to a professional journal. Let's hope they don't reject it so I have something on my CV to back up that new confidence!
In Gillefond household news, Reg once again won husband of the year. While I was in Cali, he broke down the bed in the guest room to make space for the crib we purchased on Craigslist for a steal! and the dresser/changing table unit we got on clearance at Babies R Us (steal x 2!).
Here is an online photo of the dresser/changing table combo:
