Tonight was the LAST STRAW! Everyone in this town, under the age of 40 is connected via 1 or 2 people, to everyone else. Screw 6 degrees, this is 2 degrees of yinzer separation!
Try to keep up:
Reg and I move to Pittsburgh. We meet an old HS friend, Matt, at another HS friend, Brian's, wedding. Matt invites Reggie to play football on Sunday mornings. Reg meets Bethany, Vivien, and Sam at football.
Amanda starts teaching at Pitt. Amanda has Rachel W. as a student. Rachel notes, via facebook, that she is also friends with the HS friend, Brian, from her former career as a teacher.
Amanda and Reggie are invited by Bethany to attend the 3rd annual Love of Friends party to benefit Planned Parenthood & the Midwife Center. We meet Regina. Regina also knows Matt and runs this show with Bethany. At this party we meet Eva, a photographer, who was fundraising by selling photos of children in a Haitian orphanage run by 2 women from Pittsburgh. Falling in love with all Haitian faces being a special talent of mine, we scoop up the most adorable of the photos. A year later that same photographer helps to pass on information about the amazing recovery of the BRESMA orphans after the tragic earthquake, and their trip to Pittsburgh
Reggie works for UPMC and becomes friends with Rachel G.
Reggie and Amanda move out of their apartment, renting it to a young couple, Necia & Neil. Through conversations with friends of theirs, they realize we have the following friends in common: Rachel G (the co-worker), Matt, Regina, et al.
Co-worker Rachel discovers another connection- she also knows Sam (from football). Rachel also discovers through a website with the self-explanatory title, "don't date him girl" dot-com, that an ex-boyfriend of hers is written up on the slanderous site. The ex-boyfriend turns out to be another HS classmate of Amanda's, who was also friends with Matt and Brian, and at that wedding.
We purchase a house from a young couple, Gwen & Erik. Gwen professionally knows Amanda's lab-mate, Doug.
We move into our new house and meet Laurel, our neighbor, whom Reg had met before at a flower-planting event organized by Matt. We also meet Jason & Alaina; Alaina is also a Pitt student in SHRS, Amanda's department.
We become friends with Martin & Minya through Martin's sister who worked with Amanda. Via the ever informative "friends you have in common" feature on facebook, we learn that Minya is friends with Regina (from love of friends) through a college friend of Minya's (i think).
Minya invites us over for a game-night at their house. There we meet Sandy. about 6 weeks later we host the 3rd Martinis for Mamas charity happy hour. We invite Vivien, who is also our connection to the charity we are supporting. When Sandy arrives, she recognizes Viv from the dance class that she teaches!
Our friends Leah & Rabih also move to Highland Park (our lovely neighborhood). Their neighbors are Kaleab & Alyssa. We attend the 4th annual Love of Friends with this group. There, I run into my dermatologist (well, the PA whom I always see), Katie, and learn quickly that she is friends from growing up and college with Kaleab and Alyssa. In viewing some facebook photos of Alyssa, I see a photo of Alyssa, Katie, and MATT AND SAM at the Pittsburgh HotHouse party 2009, which we also attended, not with these people, because we didn't even know most of them at that time.
Today, I see via facebook (I mean, really, god bless it) that a high school friend, Greg, who is also friends with Matt & Brian, has become friends with Nicole, the wife of the lab-mate Doug (who knows the folks we bought the house from)!
Are you still with me? I think I may have to chart this. I'm sure there are many many more connections that I'm not thinking of now, but I had to get this all down. it's really astounding and creepy and wonderful all at the same time.
ahhhh urbansuburban and the people you have allowed us to meet!!!
Crazy stuff. Don't forget that we bought our house from the woman who had just gotten her Master's degree from Kittie (our advisor), and who left Pittsburgh to move to NC (where I'm from).
ReplyDeleteAfter we bought the house, it was vacant for a couple months so we rented it out to a nice family who had just closed on their house and was waiting for their new purchase to go through. Turns out we had looked at their house which was for-sale during our search, and when they made their temporary move to our house, they realized they had considered buying our house, too.
OR that Alyssa knows Bloomer from college!
