One of my favorite (if not my absolute favorite) things to do is entertain- dinner parties, drinks on the porch, birthday parties, holiday parties, dance parties, costume parties, and on and on. If you give me a reason, I will throw a party for it! Big or small. One of my absolute favorites- out of town guests. Selfishly, I like having my friends all to myself, so I like when they come here so I don't have to share them with anyone or anything else except me and my life. Selfish? maybe. Effective? definitely.
We decided about 2 months ago to NOT gut and re-do the upstairs guest room and save a few grand. Instead, we set about painting and refinishing the fireplace. That is still a work in progress- it is stripped but needs to be stained and varnished. Soon!
the guest room as it was when the last homeowners lived here. Note the odd closet jutting out with ugly doors....and everything else that is ugly. It was a room for their 2 small children
we did our best to spruce it up with furniture and decorations- not so great, but I think at least a small improvement:
we painted the walls- Behr "wasabi powder", and you can see the started fireplace.
might paint the inside of the shelves, not sure yet
we hung white wooden blinds and translucent curtains where the closet door used to be, also painted the inside of the closet white ( Behr "innocence") so its not the scary dark hole it was before (dark wood panelling)
And best of all, 2 of my dear friends from college will be here any minute to spend the week! Our first guests in the new room. So, its not newly plastered, dry walled, and high-ceilinged. But I think not too bad afterall. We will also eventually replace the light fixture, need to think about what to get first.
