8 week milestones

Mathilda had her 8-week checkup and first round of vaccinations on Friday. She's a big girl- 11lbs, 10 oz, & 23 inches long! Exactly 3 lbs heavier than when she was born!  She did so well with the shots- 3 of them in her chubby little thighs.  I might have teared up a bit when she started to cry after realizing that the shots hurt.  Luckily I had to finish nursing her after, which immediately calmed her. She's so brave!

About 10 days ago she started to smile at us when we talk to her, and has started to babble more.  The speech pathologist in me loves all of the sounds that she makes, and the "turn taking" she does (we talk, then she talks, etc). Go joint attention!  She is such a happy baby.  Her daytime fussiness has really decreased.  She is also starting to sleep more at night. About half of the time she sleeps in about 5 hour stretches, but the other half we are still up every 2.5-3 hours for feedings.  Just hoping that the longer sleep periods become more frequent.  I actually dreamed while sleeping this week for I think the first time since she was born! Something about Barack Obama, playing chess, and taking a class on anti-coagulants. (No joke- I have no idea how those images came to replay in my subconscious!)  I've been spoiled by those sleep stretches so when she does awaken after only 2.5 hours, I cannot believe how tired I am- I can barely get out of bed!

We also started going to "Mommy & Me" yoga this week at the studio where I did my prenatal yoga. Sounds ridiculous, right?  It was fantastic! The first 30 minutes is traditional yoga for the moms, the last 30min is structured yoga poses while holding the baby.  Mathilda was great- no crying at all. I think she liked the ambiance of the room (A/C blasting, babies making noise, music playing) as well as all of the movement.  It also felt great to do something for me, and to get some exercise other than long walks around the neighborhood. Oh- and to do yoga where I could lay on my back, see my toes, and do basic bends without being short of breath!  I felt a little tug at my heart when the instructor was playing the same yoga music that we played while in labor.  Oh, how far we've come, Tilly!  I met some other really nice moms and cute babies. Maybe a way to make some like-minded parent friends?   Unfortunately, all of the classes are during the day, and none (I checked multiple studios) are for Daddy & baby.  It seems ridiculous to me- what happens for moms who work, or dads who want to take their kid to a class?  I'm lucky that even once back to work/school my schedule is flexible enough that I will probably be able to do a class a week. But it seems like other moms and dads really get a bum deal.

I will post 2 month photos of the little bear around June 9th :-)
