The first week in June marks the start of our farm-share (or CSA- community supported agriculture). We picked a new farm this year. While we will miss the familiarity of the weekly meetings at the farmer's market with our previous farmstress, this new farm offers much greater veggie varieties, plus fruits, and partners with a chicken and cow farm so we can opt in for free-range, grass-fed meat on the regular.
Our garden is also picking up- the strawberries and green leaf lettuce were ready to harvest this week. Everyday we get a cereal-bowl-sized crop of berries, which is really exciting. I've learned to pick them before they are bright red- they ripen a bit more once picked so you don't want them to be overripe.
With Reggie home for the long memorial day weekend, I had the baby assistance that allowed me to get back to some of my baketressing ways. Oh, how I missed them! I have never been a fan of rhubarb, but got a few great stalks in our farm share and decided to bake strawberry-rhubarb crisp with the berries from our garden. It was fantastic! I take back everything bad I ever said about those funny little fruit-wannabes!
Again, I'm loving the recipe courtesy of the Williams-Sonoma baking book. This book has never done me wrong, everything always turns out fantastic when I use it. I'm looking forward to the rest of our crops, and the opportunity to puree and freeze some summer veggies for fall baby food. I can't believe that in a few short months she'll be eating "real" food!
