first day of school!

Good morning, Mathilda! On our way to school!

This week marks the end of my official maternity leave.  I'll be back doing "school stuff" Mon and Tues, and seeing patients at the Voice Center Thursdays.  This schedule is lighter than what I have been doing for the last 3 years, allowing me to still be full-time Mom on Wed and Fri.  Tilly had her first day of "school" this week.  She looked so cute in her little pink dress.  We were lucky to find a nice place near our house (30 min walk, or very short drive) which is also on the way to school and the hospital for me, and the highway for Reg.  We talked about school all weekend with her.  As you can see, she experienced a range of emotions...

what? school??

oh no...school.....

yaye! school!

I think the first day was a success!  We had to wake her in the morning (she was so cute, rubbing her eyes, and falling asleep while we were trying to get her ready to go).  Reggie and I dropped her off, and held it together well- no tears for any of us.  I was actually more excited than sad.  I've always loved the first day of school.  Whether it's 12 weeks or 12th grade, there is something so exciting about it.  I always feel that September and "back to school" time is more of a New Year's than the actual holiday.  A time to start over, re-charge and get your motivation and dedication back.  Plus, the outfit shopping is always fun.

Tilly bear took THREE NAPS at daycare (whaaaa???) and happily gulped down her bottles of breastmilk.  Two other new students were starting, so she had lots of new friends to make.  AND there are two other babes in cloth diapers- yaye!  Reg and I are hoping we'll maybe make some parent-friends as well. Gossip exchanged over pickup and dropoff?

She was absolutely exhausted when she came home.  The new experiences must have been completely overstimulating.  She was practically begging to go to bed at 7pm!

school is tiring!

The experience was good for me, as well.  It felt wonderful to be in the lab, at my computer with the morning sun shining in, large mug of coffee in hand, by 8am.  This schedule will allow me to be a better student because there is no time to waste, and a better mother because I am thrilled to spend time with her, and not overly exhausted. I do not know how parents stay at home- and I bow to them!  It is a LOT of work. Getting a PhD is cake compared to parenting, for sure.

  1. I agree with you about the first day of school! It really is one of the best feelings... When I saw that you were already going back to work, I was thinking - so soon? Good luck balancing it all, I think working Moms that don't work TOO much have the best possible life.
